Bill would prohibit new uranium mining around the Grand Canyon

The Wilderness Society welcomes the introduction of the Grand Canyon Protection Act. This legislation would prohibit new uranium mining around Grand Canyon National Park, helping to protect against the contamination of water supplies and threats to Native American cultural rights, public health, wildlife and the tourism-based economy of the region.

"The Grand Canyon is a national treasure and sacred land to several Native American Tribes. We must protect it, along with the people who live in the canyon and surrounding areas, from the dangers of uranium mining contamination," said Mike Quigley, Arizona State Director, The Wilderness Society. "We’re grateful to Chairman Grijalva for his unwavering efforts to protect this special place and look forward to the bill becoming law."
