Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front has finally been made whole again. In an eagerly anticipated announcement, the Department of the Interior canceled the final remaining leases in the Badger-Two Medicine, a region that is central to the Blackfeet Nation’s cultural identity.
This evening, the House Republican conference passed a rule change that would make it easier to sell off federal land to states. Current rules requiring spending offsets would be abolished. The change is part of the House rules package.
President Obama acted on the urging of several Native American tribes and their supporters by designating national monuments in Nevada and Utah. This action followed years of public demand for better protections and the growing threats from looting, vandalism and theft.
Today the Bureau of Land Management in Colorado announced that it will move forward with a master leasing plan for oil and gas leasing and development in Montezuma and La Plata counties, on lands managed by BLM’s Tres Rios Field Office.
