In response to today’s release of a bill making the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge coastal plain available for leasing, The Wilderness Society issued the following statement from Alaska Regional Director, Nicole Whittington-Evans:
“Today, Senator Murkowski took another step forward in her bid to hand one of the wildest places in America over to her oil industry friends. It is a terrible abuse of the budget reconciliation process to force an Arctic Refuge drilling proposal through Congress. This bill is less about meeting revenue targets than it is about approving drilling on the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge without the possibility of a filibuster.
"Most Americans oppose drilling in the refuge and the backers of this bill are keenly aware that if it were subject to a full debate and vote, the scheme would lose on the merits. With millions of acres already open for oil leasing in the Arctic, industrializing and destroying this refuge makes absolutely no sense.”
