GIS Analysis of Oil and Gas Resources in Northwest Colorado

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

This analysis by The Wilderness Society presents estimates of the technically recoverable undiscovered oil and natural gas resources in the Bureau of Land Management's Little Snake Resource Area.

Key findings include:

  • The lands proposed for protection in the Citizens' Wilderness Proposal make up only 6% of the Little Snake Resource Area; these lands contain less than 5% of the technically recoverable natural gas in the Little Snake Resource Area and just over 1% of the oil.
  • The Vermillion Basin Proposed Wilderness Area contains only enough technically recoverable natural gas to supply U.S. energy needs for about 10 days, and less than 20 minutes worth of oil.
